Lion Brand Mandala Tweed – Yarn Review

Lion Brand Mandala Tweed – Yarn Review

I got the opportunity to review Lion Brand Mandala Tweed yarn. A huge thank you to Yarn Canada for supplying the yarn for this review. 🙂

A little about the yarn itself. Its self striping and comes in 3 different colour ways. I’m working with the Dice colour way.

  • Fibre: 100% Acrylic
  • Weight: 7 oz / 200 g
  • Length: 568 yd / 520 m

If you’ve tried Mandala yarn you’ll know that they are usually a lighter weighted yarn (DK – #3). Mandala Tweed is actually a worsted weight – #4. I would actually categorize it as a light worsted, similar to Caron Simply Soft.

Quick swatch using a 8mm hook

I am a huge fan of yarn cakes and centre pulls. This makes it very easy to see the different colour changes within the yarn itself. I found that Mandala Tweed has quite a few colour changes. I counted about 8 different colours.

Now the one thing (and I’m sure as you know with a lot of the caked yarn out there like Mandala yarn and Caron Cakes) it does make it difficult to chose 2 that are similar to work with for the same project. However with the large size of this one (at 568 yds) you can most likely make just about anything with just one skein!

Lion Brand Mandala Tweed

This is a 100% acrylic yarn and it is very soft and smooth to work with. Working with a smaller hook (5mm) I found that the yarn can split, this is due to the fact that its 2 colours twisted together. But using a larger hook (9mm), I didn’t have any issues.

All in all I did enjoy working with this yarn. Comes in a large skein, worsted weight and a very soft acrylic yarn makes it a delight to create garments and accessories out of.

I created a free crochet pattern with this yarn as well, check out the Gateway 2.0 Chevron Super Scarf pattern here. 🙂
